Julius Schmidt (born August 8, 1823 in Sangerhausen , † October 14, 1897 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German mining and metallurgical engineer, historian , art historian , local researcher and prehistoric scientist .

Life

Julius Schmidt attended various schools in Sangerhausen, Freiberg and Aschersleben . In 1847 he began studying the new languages ​​in Berlin and learned English and Spanish . In 1848 he went to the Polytechnic in Dresden and then to Freiberg, where he studied mineralogy , geognosy , chemistry and metallurgy . From 1851 he worked in the mining and metallurgical industries in Central and South America . In Central America, he also visited the ancient Mayan cities of Copán and Quirigua . In 1861 he returned to Europe.

In the following years he lived in Dresden, Nuremberg , Weimar , Stuttgart and Sangerhausen and introduced private studies on the history , History , Art History and Archeology at. He went on research trips to France , Italy , Austria , Dalmatia and Greece . In Athens he made the acquaintance of Heinrich Schliemann .

In 1869 Schmidt did his doctorate at the University of Leipzig with the thesis The Serpentine and the history of the industry based on its occurrence in Saxony . In 1890 he moved to Halle (Saale), where on July 1st he succeeded Hans von Borries as director of the Provincial Museum, today's State Museum of Prehistory . In the following years he carried out numerous excavations. In 1894 he was appointed professor at the University of Halle-Wittenberg . Julius Schmidt died on October 14, 1897. His successor in the role of museum director was Rudolf Kautzsch .

He was the editor of the first volume of the communications from the Provincial Museum of the Province of Saxony in Halle ad Saale .
