Hans Christian Bodo Karl Friedrich August von Borries (born August 11, 1819 on Gut Steinlake near Herford ; † May 12, 1901 in Halle (Saale) ) was a Prussian colonel and prehistoric .

Life

origin

Hans was the son of District Administrator Philipp von Borries (1778-1838) and his wife Luise, née von Bülow (1777-1861). His older brother Georg (1811-1870) was district administrator for the Herford district .

Career

Borries attended high school in Herford and then embarked on an officer career in the Prussian army . He initially served in the 7th Artillery Brigade in Munster . He later lived in Berlin and Danzig . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he commanded the 2nd Division of the Lower Silesian Field Artillery Regiment No. 5 as a lieutenant colonel . Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, he advanced to Colonel and retired from military service in 1872 for health reasons. Borries moved to Weißenfels , where he was involved as an honorary city councilor in founding several associations (beautification, antiquity, music and literary associations). In 1883 he became a curator for several scattered holdings, from which the provincial administration wanted to create a “Museum for local history and antiquity of the province of Saxony” (“Provincial Museum” for short). This museum, today's State Museum of Prehistory , was opened in 1884 in the east wing of the New Residence in Halle (Saale). On July 16, 1884, von Borries was appointed first director of the museum and moved his residence to Halle. In addition to organizing and increasing the museum holdings, he also carried out several excavations in Rössen , Kuckenburg , Giebichenstein , Döllingen , Schkölen and Hohen . Borries retired on July 1, 1890. Julius Schmidt was his successor as museum director .

Borries married Marie von Birckham (1838–1899) on December 6, 1859 in Essen. The following children were born from the marriage:
