Friedrich Schlette

Friedrich Schlette (born October 18, 1915 in Königsberg , † August 7, 2003 in Halle (Saale) ) was a German prehistoric scientist .

Life

Friedrich Schlette passed his Abitur in 1934 and then began studying prehistory and early history at the University of Breslau and later went to the universities of Munich , Göttingen and Halle . In 1935 he joined the NSDAP with membership number 2,370,100 and took part in World War II from 1939 . In 1946 he became a research assistant at the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory at the MLU in Halle. Schlette received his doctorate there in November 1948, the subject of the dissertation was Neolithic fortifications in Central Europe . In 1950 he joined the NDPD . The habilitation took place in September 1955 with the text The oldest house and settlement forms of humans based on the Stone Age finds of Europe and ethnological comparisons , experts were Martin Jahn , Friedrich Behn and Hans Haussherr . In the same month Schlette was appointed lecturer for prehistory and early history, in March 1959 professor with teaching assignment. From 1959 to 1966 he was director of the Institute for Prehistory and Early History in Halle, and since February 1963 he has taught as a full professor. Schlette was also vice dean of the Philosophical Faculty from 1963 to 1968 and a member of the People's Chamber for the NDPD from 1963 to 1967 . Between September 1966 and 1986 he was a professor of a chair for prehistory and early history in Halle and at the same time director of the department and later of the research area of ​​prehistory and early history of the Oriental and Classical Studies section of the MLU. In 1986 Schlette retired, but was also a member of the Presidium of the Historians' Society of the GDR .

Schlette dealt with broad areas of prehistory and early history, from the Neolithic to the archeology of the Celts and Teutons . Many of his popular scientific publications were widely distributed in the GDR and were published several times, some books were also translated into other languages. In 1964 he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze , in 1980 Schlette received the award in silver. Since 1982 he has been honorary chairman of the GDR Historian Society.
