Friedrich Behn (born February 14, 1883 in Neustrelitz ; † August 20, 1970 in Mainz ) was a German prehistorian .

Life

Behn, son of the senior postal secretary Friedrich Behn and his wife Maria Heister, visited the grammar school in Neustrelitz for a while , but passed the Abitur in 1901 in Hamburg , where his father had been transferred in 1895. In the same year he began studying classical archeology as well as theology and music at the University of Rostock , which he continued from the summer semester of 1902 at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . In October 1902 he returned to Rostock, but left the university in the summer semester of 1903 for Heidelberg. During his studies he became a member of the Academic-Musical Association Stauffia Heidelberg (in the Sondershäuser Association ). After returning to Rostock in October 1903, Behn finally finished his studies in 1906 with a doctorate on the subject of The Ficoronische Cista with Carl Watzinger . After working as a private tutor in Hamburg, he came to the Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (RGZM) in Mainz as a volunteer in 1909 , where he initially worked as a research assistant, then as a research assistant, assistant director and curator . Shortly before the First World War, Behn completed his habilitation in 1914 at the Technical University of Darmstadt in the subject of antiquity and monument preservation .

After serving in a surveying department during the war, he received the title of professor at the TH Darmstadt on April 1, 1920. From 1922 he was assigned the task of preserving monuments at the RGZM and Behn was responsible for the preservation of monuments in southern Hesse until 1945 , initially in Starkenburg and finally in Rheinhessen . In this function, he and Karl Nahrgang carried out excavations in Hagen Castle (Dreieichenhain) in 1924 and 1925 . In 1926 he became an associate professor in Darmstadt. Excavations in the Lorsch Monastery followed from 1927 to 1937 - pioneering work in the field of archeology of the Middle Ages . From 1931 to 1933 he also carried out excavations with Otto Müller in the area of the Einhards basilica in Steinbach near Michelstadt .

Behn already represented ethnic views in the 1920s. Works such as "Old Germanic Art", which appeared in three editions between 1927 and 1936, wanted to "bring the long-buried sources of Germanic art with a distinctly ethnic character" to flow again.

After his retirement in 1948, he moved to the University of Leipzig , where he became a full professor in 1950 and held the chair there until his retirement in 1954, but temporarily held it until 1963. From 1949 to 1957 he was also director of the Leipzig Institute for Pre- and Protohistory at the university. In 1949 Behn became a full member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences , from 1963 he was a corresponding member.

In 1963 he returned to Mainz, where he died on August 15, 1970. Behn had been married to Elisabeth Ristenpart since 1922. Behn and his wife are buried in the mausoleum of the Lattmann family in the old cemetery in Goslar.
