These works were expressly offered as school editions of German classics.
Volume 11 Astronomy by August Ferdinand Möbius was the first scientific volume to be added to the Göschen Collection in 1889. This was followed in 1890 by volumes on pedagogy, geology, psychology and logic, German mythology and, as an extension of the classical works of Lessing's Philotas.
With the expansion of the collection to include other scientific and engineering fields, the demands also changed, and soon after the turn of the century it said in the front fold-out of the small volumes:
“Göschen Collection. Our current knowledge in short, clear, generally understandable individual representations "or" The purpose and aim of the 'Göschen Collection' is to give a clear, easily understandable and well-arranged introduction to all areas of science and technology in individual representations; Edited in a narrow framework, on a strictly scientific basis and taking into account the latest research, each ribbon should offer reliable instruction. Each individual area is shown closed in itself, but all the ribbons are internally connected with each other, so that the whole, when it is complete, should form a uniform, systematic representation of our entire knowledge. "
The volumes (initially at 80 pfennigs each) changed from school reading to university reading.
In 1910 the volume with the serial number 500 was published, namely Georg Simmel's contribution The main problems of philosophy. Another milestone was set in 1931 with the volume number 1000, this time with the contribution by Karl Jaspers Die Geistige Situation der Zeit.
The Göschen Collection was continued until the mid-1990s and then gradually merged into other series of the de Gruyter publishing house, Berlin, and others.
