history

On the back covers of the Göschen Collection , the WdG logo (Walter de Gruyter, left) replaced the GJG logo (G. J. Göschen, right)

In the early days, GJ Göschen'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung published works of the German classics Schiller , Goethe , Klopstock , Lessing and Wieland . After the founder's death, the publishing house passed to his son Hermann Julius Göschen and in 1838 came to the Cotta'sche publishing house in Stuttgart . In 1868, long-time Cotta employee Ferdinand Weibert acquired the publishing house and moved the headquarters to Stuttgart . With Gottfried Keller an important writer could be won for the publishing house. With another change of ownership to Adolph Nast, the publishing house got a new direction. The publishing assistant Ernst Waiblinger founded the Göschen Collection in 1889 as a popular science series of the sciences. In 1896 Wilhelm von Crayen took over the publishing house and moved the headquarters back to Leipzig. Under his direction, further popular science series with the Schubert collection and Göschen's teaching library were created . When Walter de Gruyter joined the publishing house in 1912, the publishing house lost its independence. At the end of 1918, G. J. Göschen'sche Verlagbuchhandlung merged with four other publishers to form Walter de Gruyter .
