Guido Hoheisel (1930)

Guido Heinrich Karl Hoheisel (born July 14, 1894 in Breslau ; † October 11, 1968 in Cologne ) was a German mathematician.

Hoheisel was born in 1893 as the son of the Rentenbank dieter Karl Hoheisel and his wife Theofila née Mausch. From 1914 he studied at the University of Breslau and from 1920 at the Humboldt University in Berlin , where he received his doctorate in 1920 under Erhard Schmidt (Linear functional differential equations, Mathematische Zeitschrift Vol. 14, 1922, pp 35-98) and Issai Schur . During his studies he became a member of the KStV Unitas Breslau . He completed his habilitation in Breslau, where he was a private lecturer from 1922 and an associate professor from 1928. From 1935 he was in the same position at the University of Greifswald and from 1938 first substitute professor and from 1939 full professor at the University of Cologne , from 1940 as director of the Mathematical Institute. In 1962 he retired in Cologne.

In 1930 he proved a theorem about prime number gaps: if p n is the nth prime then holds

p n +1 - p n < p n θ

with a constant θ <1 for sufficiently large n . Hoheisel showed that θ = 32999/33000 can be taken. Another proof and a tightening to θ = 249/250 was given by Hans Heilbronn . Nikolai Grigorjewitsch Tschudakow (Chudakov) (lower limit ¾) in 1936 and Albert Ingham (lower limit 5/8) in 1937 and Martin Huxley 1972 (θ = 7/12) gave further tightening of the lower limits of θ .

Hoheisel married Ingeborg Elvira Pfaff in Dresden in 1937 . He died in 1968 at the age of 74 in Cologne University Hospital .
