Albert Debrunner
Albert Debrunner (born February 8, 1884 in Basel , † February 2, 1958 in Bern ) was a Swiss Indo-Europeanist , Graecist and linguist .
Life
Albert Debrunner studied in Basel with Ferdinand Sommer and Alfred Körte and in Göttingen with Friedrich Leo and Jacob Wackernagel . The doctorate took place in 1907. In the same year he passed the secondary school diploma. This was followed by a job as a school teacher in Schiers , Basel and Zurich . During this time he began to revise the "Grammar of New Testament Greek" by Friedrich Blass .
His habilitation took place in 1917. He then taught as a private lecturer in comparative linguistics in Zurich and in 1918 became an associate professor at the University of Greifswald . In 1920 he became a full professor in Bern. In 1925 he taught as a lecturer in Jena .
In 1935 Debrunner returned to Bern in a "spectacular" professorship swap with Walter Porzig, who had been dismissed for Nazi activities , and there became professor of Indo-European linguistics and classical philology . After Eduard Schwyzer's death in 1943, he took care of the completion of his "Greek grammar" as part of the handbook of classical studies .
From 1940 to 1949, in addition to teaching in Bern, he also taught linguistics at the University of Basel. He retired in 1954. From 1948 he was a corresponding member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
With over 600 published titles, Debrunner is considered one of the most productive Indo-Europeanists of the 20th century, with his work on Hellenistic Greek in particular still serving as standard reference works. In addition, he advocated the employment of linguists with artificial languages (see also International Auxiliary Language Association ).
