Emanuel Linder (philologist)

Emanuel Linder (born February 6, 1768 in Basel ; † April 4, 1843 ) was a Swiss classical philologist , theologian and historian .

Life

The son of a confectioner studied from April 17, 1781 at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Basel and obtained the degree of Baccalaureus artium on May 13, 1785 . From April 13, 1785 he studied theology . On November 17, 1789 he was promoted to a candidate for a ministerial office ("Sancti Ministerii Candidatus", SMC) and gave a trial sermon three days later.

On May 4, 1790, Linder was appointed professor of history . On October 23, 1795 he exchanged the chair with Johann Rudolf Schnell and became professor of Hebrew . In 1797/98 and 1802/03 he was Dean of the Philosophical Faculty. From May 14, 1803 to 1819 he worked as a pastor in Bennwil . On July 15, 1819, he returned to the University of Basel as a professor of Greek language and literature , and from November 11, 1819, he also worked as a lecturer in Hebrew. In 1821, 1827 and 1834 he was again dean of the Philosophical Faculty. In 1835 Linder resigned from his teaching duties.
