Johann Rudolf Schnell

Johann Rudolf Schnell (born October 7, 1767 in Basel ; † March 21, 1829 there ) was a Swiss lawyer and judge.

Life

Johannes Schnell, son of an iron trader and court lord, finished his studies at the University of Basel in 1795 with a licentiate in both rights. In the same year Los received the professorship for Hebrew , which he exchanged with Emanuel Linder for the professorship for history. 1796–1798 he was the last mayor of Grossbasel (chairman of the city court). 1798–1802, with a brief interruption in 1799, he was President of the Supreme Court of the Helvetic Republic . From 1803–1819 he presided over both the civil and criminal courts in the still undivided canton of Basel, and in this function initiated a reform of the administration of justice in Basel. In 1819 he received his doctorate as Dr. iur and in the same year was appointed professor of Roman and patriotic law at the University of Basel, of which he was rector in 1822.
