Rudolf Ludwig Friedrich Herzog (born August 31, 1871 in Tübingen ; † March 11, 1953 in Großhesselohe ) was a German classical philologist , archaeologist and medical historian .

Life

As the son of Tübingen professor Ernst Herzog (1834–1911), Rudolf Herzog attended grammar school and the Protestant theological seminars in Maulbronn and Blaubeuren . After studying classical philology at the universities of Bonn , Berlin and Tübingen , he received his doctorate in 1894 . As a student in Tübingen, he joined the Igel University of Tübingen in the winter semester of 1889/90 . From 1895 to 1897 he was in high school in Württemberg and received a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute in 1897/98 , which took him to the sites of antiquity in the Mediterranean region and above all to the island of Kos . After completing his habilitation , he became a private lecturer in 1899 and an extraordinary professor in 1903. From 1900 to 1907 he carried out excavations of the Asklepieion of Kos, which he had discovered . From July 17, 1909 until the end of the winter semester 1913/14, he was full professor and full professor of Greek philology in Basel , succeeding Ferdinand Sommer . In 1914 he accepted a position at the University of Giessen as full professor of classical philology and successor to Alfred Körtes ; his colleague there was Karl Kalbfleisch . In 1928 he was elected rector of the University of Giessen for one year and made chancellor in 1933. In 1936 he retired .

On July 5, 1934, he gave a “strange vote” that prevented Karl Reinhardt and Friedrich Pfister from calling to Giessen.

Rudolf Herzog was a member of the NSDAP , received an honorary doctorate from the Medical Faculty of Rostock University in 1933 and became a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences in 1941 . As a member of the German Gymnasium Association , he was its last chairman until 1945.

He was the paternal grandfather of the filmmaker Werner Herzog .
