Albrecht von Blumenthal

Albrecht von Blumenthal (born August 10, 1889 in Staffelde in the Uckermark, † March 28, 1945 in Marburg ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Albrecht von Blumenthal came from an old noble family in the Brandenburg region . He studied Classical Philology, partly as a Rhodes Scholar at Lincoln College ( Oxford ) (1908-9) and received his doctorate in Halle in 1913 with the dissertation Hellanicea: De Atlantiade . He took part in the First World War for five years as a war volunteer. In the second battle in Champagne he was taken prisoner by the French. After the end of the war he went to the University of Jena and completed his habilitation there in 1922. During these years he published studies on Aeschylus , Archilochus and Hellanikos of Lesbos . In addition, since 1927 he has written articles for the Realencyclopedia of Classical Classical Studies . In 1928 he was appointed associate professor in Jena. In 1938 he was appointed personal professor at the University of Giessen to represent Rudolf Herzog's chair . In 1940 he was appointed professor and therefore joined the NSDAP in the same year . He also held the office of dean and, from the summer semester of 1943, also represented the Greek chair at the University of Marburg .

Albrecht von Blumenthal was married to Wilhelmine (Billy) Hainsworth between 1912 and 1921. The couple had two sons together, Werner (1914-2003, as English Richard Arnold-Baker) and Wolfgang (1918-2009, as English Charles Arnold-Baker ). In February 1945, Blumenthal fled from the approaching American army to Marburg. On March 28th, he and his second wife Erika, nee. Shake life.

Like Woldemar Graf Uxkull-Gyllenband, Albrecht von Blumenthal belonged to the George Circle , to which he also introduced the ancient scholar Alexander Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and his brothers Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and Berthold Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg .
