Wolfgang Schuller

Wolfgang Schuller (born October 3, 1935 in Berlin ; † April 4, 2020 in Konstanz ) was a German ancient historian , lawyer and contemporary historian . He taught from 1976 until his retirement in 2004 as a professor of ancient history at the University of Konstanz . He worked on Greek and Roman antiquity as well as the history of the GDR .

Live and act

The descendant of the philosopher Johann Caspar Lavater visited, among other things, the free school community Wickersdorf . After graduating from high school in Lüneburg in 1955 , he first studied law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg , the Université de Lausanne and the University of Hamburg . In 1960 he passed his first state examination in Hamburg and in 1965 his second state examination in Berlin. After the assessor examination, he worked as a research assistant at the law faculty of the University of Hamburg between 1965 and 1967. There, during his doctoral thesis in law, he began studying Classical Antiquities, Egyptology and History. In 1967 he was in Hamburg with a dissertation on political criminal in East Germany from 1945 to 1963 to the Dr. iur. is doing his doctorate and has completed his second degree at the Free University of Berlin . In 1971 he completed his habilitation in ancient history at the FU.

In 1972 he received his first full professorship for ancient history at the PH Berlin . In 1976 he accepted a chair for ancient history at the University of Konstanz, where he remained until his retirement in early 2004. Ulrich Gotter was his successor . In addition to many offices at the University of Konstanz, he also held an honorary professorship at the Romanian partner university, the University of Alexandru Ioan Cuza Iași .

Schuller remained scientifically active into old age. In his research, Schuller dealt not only with law but also with gender history and also emerged with several introductory works on antiquity, including as the author of the first volume in the series Oldenbourg Grundriss der Geschichte . He also reached a broader readership with biographies on Cleopatra and Cicero .

Since 1990 Schuller has been a full member of the Academy of Charitable Sciences in Erfurt . In addition to antiquity, his research interests also focused on the history of the GDR, on which he has also presented several publications, most recently in 2009 on the events of 1989. Wolfgang Schuller also published numerous articles, not only in ancient historical journals and anthologies, but also in the memorial book for the Carl Schmitt student Roman Schnur and in the magazine Mut . He also edited Carl Schmitt's diaries from 1930 to 1934. Schuller was also a member of the Görres Society .

Wolfgang Schuller died in April 2020 at the age of 84.
