Gustav Seibt (born March 10, 1959 in Munich ) is a German historian , literary critic , writer (essay) and journalist . He has been working for the Süddeutsche Zeitung since 2001 and publishes historical non-fiction books.

Life

Seibt attended the humanistic Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich from 1969 to 1978 , where he passed his Abitur . He then studied history as well as German, Latin and Italian literature in Konstanz, Munich, Bielefeld and Rome. In 1990 he studied Medieval History with Arno Borst in Konstanz with the dissertation Anonimo Romano. History writing in Rome on the threshold of the renaissance to Dr. phil. PhD. Seibt's oral doctoral examination, at which the later FAZ co-editor Frank Schirrmacher was also present, was literarily processed by Eckhard Henscheid in the short story 10: 9 for straw .

From 1987 to 1996 he was the features editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , and from 1994, as successor to Schirrmacher, he was head of the literary and literary life editorial team . In 1997 he moved to the culture department of the Berliner Zeitung . In 2000/01 he was the author of the Hamburg weekly newspaper Die Zeit . He has been writing for the Süddeutsche Zeitung since 2001 .

In 1998/99 he was visiting professor for literary criticism at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . Seibt has been a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt since 2003 and of the literature section of the Berlin Academy of the Arts since 2004 .

In 2001, his book on the struggle for Rome (1870) received great attention . According to Paul Hoser , he “succeeded in writing a piece of history in the classical tradition”. Christof Dipper , who identifies Seibt as a historian and journalist as well as a "high level Italian expert", considers the book to be "thoughtful" and "stimulating".

He dealt extensively with Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ; several of his works were non-fiction books of the month : Goethe and Napoleon. A historical encounter (1st place in October 2008), Goethe's authority. Essays and Speeches (5th place in August 2013) and With a kind of anger. Goethe in the Revolution (3rd place in December 2014).

Seibt has been a partner of the Berlin FDP politician Carl Grouwet since 2009 and lives in Berlin .
