Fragrance note

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Fragrance notes are groups of fragrances for which certain characteristics are typical. For example, perfumes can generally be divided into two groups, women's notes and men's notes, although in recent years the boundary between masculine and feminine fragrances has begun to dissolve and androgynous fragrances are increasingly taking their place in perfumeries. There have been and still are efforts to classify the variety of fragrances. There are the historical fragrances that have shaped their own fragrance, such as "Chypre" or "Fougère"; But there are also always independent fragrances that establish a new fragrance direction, such as "Thé vert".

The most popular fragrances are described below, without following a specific principle of order.

Ladies notes

  • Flowery Flowery notes are found in practically all perfumes. The most common floral notes are jasmine and rose . Fragrance creations in which a floral note dominates are also called "Soliflore" (for example lily of the valley ). The mixture of different floral notes is called a "bouquet".
  • Flowery-fruity The fruity notes complement the flowery ones , but should not drown them out.
  • Fruity fruity notes such as peach , raspberry , plum are used as nuances in perfumery. There are also citrus fruit notes , the so-called hesperides.
  • Erogen Erogenic scent notes are achieved with warm, animal notes such as musk , civet , ambergris and castoreum .
  • Chypre Collective term for perfumes that are characterized on the one hand by citrus freshness in the top note and on the other hand by oakmoss and patchouli in the base note . Many chypre-type perfumes are warm, sensual scents.
  • Oriental Arouses associations with the balsamic scents and spices of the Orient . So-called winter and evening perfumes. Typical fragrances are amber and vanilla .
  • Powdery scent impression that arises when long-lasting, mossy, woody, sweet and crystalline elements work together. In many perfumes, it occurs when the fresh and flowery components have evaporated.
  • Sweet -looking fragrance components are contained in many chypre and oriental-type perfumes, but floral and fruity fragrances can also be very sweet. The best-known sweet-smelling natural product is the extract of the vanilla pod .
  • Warm Characteristic are the animal scents in the perfumes of the Chypre and Orient types.
  • Spicy Spicy fragrances are very much in fashion, but as cinnamon and clove they are indispensable in oriental perfumes.

Gentlemen notes

  • Chypre The men's chypre fragrances often have fresh, aromatic, woody or leathery accents, which gives them an elegant character.
  • Citrus scents, which get their character from the increased use of citrus plants - such as bergamot , lemon, mandarin or orange, belong to this note.
  • Fougère Based on the interplay of lavender, oak moss and coumarin , a plant substance that is harmful to health in large quantities. Classic compositions of this fragrance family can be recognized by a dominant lavender aroma. Fougère components can only be found in men's fragrances.
  • Woody The increased use of elements such as sandalwood, cedarwood, patchouli or vetiver give these fragrances a warm and dry heart note.
  • Leathery Leather notes are used - similar to woody notes - to accentuate predominantly masculine fragrance compositions. They are available in many different varieties, from floral and velvety to sour and smoky.
  • Oriental A combination of vanilla and ambergris forms the fundamental character of this fragrance family. The masculinity is characterized by an intense and full body that is accentuated woody, spicy or even animal.
  • Tobacco The resinoid extracted from the tobacco leaves is used in masculine perfumes to give them a rich mildness with its strong, sweet and warm aroma. A distinction is made between sweet, mossy, woody and honey-like tobacco notes.
