Ernst Diehl (philologist)
Ernst Diehl (born June 9, 1874 in Emmerich ; † February 2, 1947 in Munich ) was a German classical philologist and epigraphist .
Life
The son of the grammar school director August Diehl (1841-1919) studied classical and Romance philology in Bonn (with Hermann Usener , Franz Bücheler and Heinrich Nissen ) and Berlin (with Hermann Diels , Emil Hübner and Otto Kern ). He received his doctorate in 1897 and in 1906 became Associate Professor of Classical Philology in Jena. In 1911 he was given a chair for Latin studies in Innsbruck and in 1925 in Halle (as successor to Georg Wissowas ), which he held until his retirement in 1937.
Services
Since his dissertation, Diehl's main focus was initially on Latin epigraphy. He published several study and selection editions (including ancient Latin inscriptions, inscriptions from Pompeii and the Res Gestae Divi Augusti ), but above all a three-volume collection of Christian inscriptions.
Later Diehl turned mainly to Greek studies . In addition to a critical edition of Proclus' commentary on Plato's Timaeus , his great work in this area was the Anthologia Lyrica Graeca .
