Antoni Małecki (born July 16, 1821 in Objezierze, Greater Poland ; † October 7, 1913 in Lemberg ) was a Polish classical philologist , Slavist , writer and university professor.

Life

Antoni Małecki, the son of a Polish farmer, attended high school in Poznan and studied classical philology and history at Berlin University . After completing his doctorate with the dissertation De Academia vetere (1844) and the teaching degree, he worked as a teacher at the Maria Magdalenen High School in Poznan. In 1850 he was appointed Associate Professor of Classical Philology at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow .

For political reasons he left Cracow in 1854 and went to the University of Innsbruck , where he soon received an extraordinary professorship in his subject. In addition to his teaching activities, Małecki studied Slavic Studies. In 1856 he was appointed professor of Polish language and literature at the University of Lemberg , where he worked in teaching, research and administration until the end of his life. In 1872 he became the rector of the University of Lviv. The following year he took a leave of absence from teaching. In 1892 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Krakow.

Małecki was a member of the Academy of Sciences in Kraków, member of the state parliament, lifelong member of the Austrian manor house and held numerous other offices. He continued his research work on Polish literature, language and history until his death.
