Otto Weinreich
Otto (Karl) Weinreich (born March 13, 1886 in Karlsruhe , † March 26, 1972 in Tübingen ) was a German classical philologist .
Otto Weinreich graduated from high school in 1904 and studied classical philology at the University of Heidelberg . There he received his doctorate in 1908 with the work on ancient healing miracles . In 1909 he passed the examination for teaching at secondary schools in Greek, Latin and German. From 1908 Weinreich was an assistant at the archaeological institute of Heidelberg University. From autumn 1911 to December 1913, the German Archaeological Institute's travel grant took him to Greece, Asia Minor and Italy. In the summer of 1912 he represented the librarian at the German Archaeological Institute in Athens. From January 1914, Weinreich published a volume with Greek inscriptions on behalf of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . In 1914 he worked as an assistant at the University of Halle . In the same year, he completed his habilitation with the thesis De dis ignotis observationes selectae in Halle . In 1916 Weinreich was appointed to an associate professor for classical philology at the University of Tübingen .
From April 1 to August 30, 1918, he became a full professor in Jena, and on September 1, 1918, he moved to Heidelberg. In 1921 Weinreich succeeded Gotthold Gundermann at the University of Tübingen as a full professor . He turned down a call to Halle in 1931. On May 1, 1937, he joined the NSDAP . In 1954 he retired. Two years later he was awarded the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. Weinreich was a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences .
In addition to epigraphy and palaeography , his research focus was primarily on the history of religion. He strove to combine ethnology and classical philology, but also published works on Swabian folklore. His studies on Greek and Latin literature ( Die Distichen des Catullus , 1926, reprint 1972; The Greek love novel , 1962) also attracted attention in professional circles . Between 1916 and 1939 he published volumes 16 to 27 of the Religious History Experiments and Preliminary Work. From 1927 to 1961 he was co-editor of the Tübingen Contributions to Classical Studies . From 1916 to 1938 he was editor of the Archives for Religious Studies , until 1922 alone, from 1923 to 1935 together with Martin Persson Nilsson and from 1936 to 1938 together with Friedrich Pfister . His translations of Roman satires and all of Catullus' poems appeared in the Library of the Old World .
