Martin Persson Nilsson
Martin Persson Nilsson (born July 12, 1874 in Stoby , Kristianstads län , Sweden , † April 7, 1967 in Lund ) was a Swedish classical philologist and religious historian .
Life
Nilsson was from 1900 private lecturer at the University of Lund . In 1905 he became secretary of the "Swedish Archaeological Commission" on Rhodes . In 1909 he became a full professor of Ancient Greek , Classical Archeology and Ancient History at Lund University. Here he was rector from 1936 to 1939 . His research covered almost all areas of classical antiquity , especially the Greek religion . He has also achieved important things in ethnology , as well as in folklore , especially in Swedish.
Nilsson was also from 1918 secretary of the Kungliga Humanistiska Vetenskapssamfundet i Lund (Royal Society of Letters in Lund) and from 1920 a member of the Kungliga Vitterhets Historie och Antikvitets academies in Stockholm. From February 7, 1924 Nilsson was a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , from 1929 member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and since 1967 foreign member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .
His best-known work is the history of the Greek religion in the handbook of classical studies , which experienced several editions. For the textbook on the history of religion by Chantepie de la Saussaye , he provided the contribution about the Greeks.
In 1939 Nilsson was elected to the British Academy and in 1940 to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
Nilsson had been married to Hanna Stjernquist (1886-1984), daughter of Otto Stjernquist and his wife Cecilia Tufvesson, since March 15, 1907.
