Pierre Daniel Chantepie de la Saussaye (born April 9, 1848 in Leeuwarden , † April 20, 1920 in Bilthoven ), son of the theologian Daniel Chantepie de la Saussaye , was a Dutch Protestant theologian and religious scholar who was primarily editor of the textbook on the history of religion (1. A. 1887, 2. A. 1897, 3. A. 1905, 4. Auf. 1925) emerged. He received his doctorate from the University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht in 1871 and is considered one of the founders of modern religious studies. From 1878 he was professor of religious history at the University of Amsterdam and from 1899 to 1916 at the University of Leiden .

Textbook of the history of religion

The textbook on the history of religion , which appeared under his name and was a standard work in the field for a long time, was last edited by Alfred Bertholet and Edvard Lehmann (4th A., 1925). PD Chantepie de la Saussaye published his textbook on the history of religion three times between 1887 and 1905; the fourth and final edition was not published until after Chantepie de la Saussaye's death in 1925. It has been completely revised and differs significantly from the previous three editions. The fourth edition contains contributions from important experts: Sten Konow (The Indians - Buddhism), Edvard Lehmann (The Persians - The Zoroastrian Religion), Bernhard Ankermann (The Religion of Primitive Peoples), Hans Ostenfeldt Lange (The Egyptians), Martin P.
