Saussaye was influenced by the Réveil , especially Isaäc da Costa , at a young age . Under the influence of the writings of Alexandre Vinet , Friedrich Schleiermacher and Karl Immanuel Nitzsch , he moved in the direction of a mild reformed orthodoxy during his time in Leiden and founded the Perdiger Association Ernst en Vrede . In terms of German mediation theology , he fought in numerous pamphlets and theological studies both the critical theology of Johannes Henricus Scholtens and the neo-orthodox anti-revolutionary direction of Guillaume Groen van Prinsterer and Abraham Kuyper . He is considered to be the founder of “ethical theology”, which was continued by Johannes Hermanus Gunning (1829–1905).

Honors

Saussaye received an honorary theological doctorate from the University of Bonn in 1868 .
