Alexandre Rodolphe Vinet (born June 17, 1797 in Ouchy , today Lausanne , † May 4, 1847 in Clarens near Vevey ) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and literary historian . He is considered a classic representative of the separation of church and state .
Life
After studying in Lausanne, he became professor of French language and literature at the Basel grammar school on Münsterplatz in 1817 , at the University of Basel in 1835 and professor of theology at the Lausanne Academy in 1837. In 1840 he resigned from the regional church as a result of the reorganization of the church in Vaud , and in 1845 he resigned as professor after the victory of radical political liberalism in the canton. Alexandre Vinet and Charles Monnards founded a national church separate from the state, the Église libre évangélique , and became the spiritual father of the free church in Vaud.
