Isaac da Costa

Isaäc da Costa (born January 14, 1798 in Amsterdam ; † April 28, 1860 there ) was a Dutch poet and writer . He was a leading figure in the conservative-Calvinist revival movement Réveil .

Life

Isaac da Costa was the son of a respected and wealthy Sephardic merchant and banker family from Portugal who had been expelled by the Inquisition . His first poetic attempts drew the attention of the poet Willem Bilderdijk ("Father of Réveil", a revival movement) to him, who has since supervised his further training and soon became friends with him. In 1817 Da Costa went to Leiden to complete his studies , where Bilderdijk also moved. After receiving his doctorate in law in 1818 and a doctorate in philosophy in 1821 , he was baptized in 1822 together with Abraham Capadose , a relative and college friend. The baptism takes place under the influence of Bilderdijk, who, however, never pushed for her conversion. Both friends have exerted a great influence as important Jewish Christians of modern times in the Dutch Orthodoxy ( Calvinism ).

Isaäc da Costa soon gained such a respected name as a poet that after Bilderdijk's death (1831) he was generally referred to as his successor in the rank of first Dutch poet. His swan song “ De slag by Nieupoort ” is one of the best that he has written.

Da Costa also tried his hand at historical and theological fields, for example with " Israel en de volken " (1849). His writings were reprinted several times; the poetic work was published in three parts (Haarlem 1861–62).
