Franz Johann Evangelista Boll (born July 1, 1867 in Rothenburg ob der Tauber , † July 3, 1924 in Heidelberg ) was a German classical philologist , astrology and astronomy historian and librarian.

Life

He was the son of a judge and studied from 1885 in Berlin and from 1887 in Munich , among others with Wilhelm von Christ , Rudolf Schöll and Michael Bernays . In 1894 he received his doctorate with a thesis on Claudius Ptolemaeus . From 1891 Boll worked in the manuscript department of the Court and State Library in Munich, from 1898 as director. In 1903 he switched to university and became professor of classical philology in Würzburg , and from 1908 in Heidelberg .

Boll was mainly concerned with ancient astronomy and astrology . Based on manuscript studies, he researched the astronomical view of the world from the ancient Orient through the Greeks and Romans to modern times as well as the history of the constellations and astrology. Since 1909 he has been in close contact with the art and cultural scientist Aby Warburg , to whom Boll's ex-libris with the motif of a pensive astronomer can be traced back and whose cultural history library Warburg revised by Wilhelm Gundel and repeated new editions of von Boll together with his friend Carl Bezold first published in 1917 book Sternglaube und Sterndeutung. The history and nature of astrology prompted.

He was a member of the Academies of Sciences in Heidelberg , Munich , Göttingen (from 1917) and Bologna and an honorary doctorate from the University of Padua . One of his academic students was Helene Homeyer (doctorate in 1922).
