Wilhelm Gundel

Wilhelm Karl Otto Gundel (born August 26, 1880 in Strasbourg , † May 5, 1945 in Gießen ) was a German classical philologist .

Wilhelm Gundel's family came from the area around Rothenburg ob der Tauber . Gundel's father became Chief Postal Secretary in Mainz in 1885 . In 1899 Gundel graduated from high school in Mainz. He studied classical philology and German in Heidelberg and Giessen . During his studies in 1900 he became a member of the Alemannia Gießen fraternity . Gundel passed the state examination for higher teaching post in 1904. In the same year he became an assistant in the Classical Philological Department at the University of Giessen. In 1906 Gundel received his doctorate there with the thesis De stellarum appellatione et religione Romana . From 1906 he worked as a teacher at the Landgraf-Ludwigs-Gymnasium for ancient languages ​​and German. In 1908 he became a senior teacher there. In 1914 at the University of Giessen the habilitation for the subject Classical Philology with the work Contributions to the development history of the terms Ananke and Heimarmene took place . In 1916 Gundel came to the Western Front , where he was seriously wounded in August 1917. From 1920 he took on an academic teaching position as an associate professor at the University of Giessen. In 1934 he was retired as a senior teacher.

Gundel's work in his specialty, the history of ancient astronomy and astronomy and its aftermath in the Middle Ages and modern times, was widely recognized by experts. In this area, Gundel took a leading position after Franz Boll's death, alongside Franz Cumont , Albert Rehm , Viktor Stegemann and Aby Warburg . Gundel is the author of numerous astronomical and astrological keywords, especially for the constellations in Paulys Realencyclopadie of classical antiquity . His son was the ancient historian Hans Georg Gundel .
