The Gilbert bamboo lemur ( Hapalemur gilberti ) is a primate species from the lemur group . It was first described in 2007 and in 2008 by Mittermeier et al. elevated to the rank of a species of its own.

Very little is known about this species, as it has so far only been separated from the eastern bamboo lemur due to differences in the karyotype . They are relatively small primates, the fur is gray-brown on the top and light gray-whitish on the underside. The tail is long and bushy and the ears are rounded.

The two specimens of the Gilbert bamboo lemur known to date from the wild come from the Beanamalao region in eastern Madagascar between the Onive and Nosivelo rivers. It is not known how far their area of distribution extends. Their habitat are with bamboo -lined rainforests , otherwise about their lifestyle little known. Like all bamboo lemurs, they are likely to live in small family groups and feed primarily on bamboo.

There is no information about the degree of endangerment due to the unclear demarcation from the eastern bamboo lemur, the IUCN lists the Gilbert bamboo lemur (still as a subspecies of the eastern bamboo lemur) under “too little data available” ( data deficient ).
