from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jörg Ulrich Ganzhorn (born October 7, 1956 in Stuttgart ) is a German biologist and professor of animal ecology at the University of Hamburg .

Jörg Ganzhorn studied zoology, plant physiology, microbiology and geography at the University of Tübingen, Duke University and Michigan State University from 1976 to 1985. He then did his doctorate with Klaus Schmidt-Koenig (Tübingen) and Peter H. Klopfer (Duke Univ.) And then became a postdoc in Tübingen in the behavioral physiology department. In 1993 he became head of the Ethology and Ecology department at the German Primate Center in Göttingen and Maître de Conference at the Université d'Antananarivo, Madagascar. After a substitute professorship for ecology at the University of Marburg, he became head of the animal ecology and nature conservation department at the Institute for Zoology at the University of Hamburg in 1997.

Research priorities

Jörg Ganzhorn researches the ecology of mammals in different habitats in Madagascar. The aim of the work is, on the basis of an understanding of ecosystem processes, to develop sustainable nature conservation concepts in which economic development for the local population is compatible with the needs of Madagascar's flora and fauna.

Awards and honors

The lemur species Ganzhorns Mausmaki ( Microcebus Ganzhorni ) was named in his honor.

Memberships

Jörg Ganzhorn is a member of the IUCN Species Survial Commission and was Chair for Primates in Madagascar from 1996 - 2012.
