Josef Martin (philologist)

Josef Martin (born January 13, 1884 in St. Ingbert ; † November 21, 1973 in Würzburg ) was a German classical philologist and rector at the University of Würzburg.

Life

Josef Martin, the son of the sculptor of the same name, studied Catholic theology at the University of Munich after graduating from high school in Speyer from 1902 , but switched to classical philology after the sixth semester under the influence of the lectures of Friedrich Vollmer and Carl Weyman , then studied from 1905 until 1907 in Würzburg and then again in Munich, where he passed the teaching degree in 1908 and worked as a high school teacher. On 13 January 1913 he was at Weyman and Vollmer with the dissertation studies and contributions to the Declaration and timing Commodians doctorate . From 1916 to 1918 Martin took part in the First World War.

After the end of the war, Martin was initially a high school teacher in Amberg and completed his habilitation in 1921 at the University of Würzburg through Ciceros De oratore . In 1922 he was appointed associate professor in Würzburg and on June 1, 1933, he was appointed full professor of classical philology as the successor to Carl Hosius . Martin held the chair for Classical Philology until his retirement (1952). Because of his distance from National Socialism , he was appointed the first post-war rector of the University of Würzburg in 1945.

During his three-year tenure, he did a lot to maintain and rebuild the university. He was also a member of the Bavarian State Advisory Committee in 1946 and a member of the Bavarian Senate from 1947 to 1949 . On May 11, 1947, on the occasion of the 325th Foundation Festival of the University of Würzburg, he gave a speech entitled Peace . In 1948 he was rector magnificus of the university, was a rector of the Academic Senate and was a member of the administrative committee led by Waldemar Schleip . Together with Friedrich Pfister , Martin was a chairman of the Classical Philology Seminar. He was made an Honorary Senator for his services to the university and was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1953 . He received the Bavarian Order of Merit on December 7, 1964.

Martin was primarily a Latinist. He dealt intensively with Roman rhetoric, philosophy ( Lucretius ) and patristics ( Augustine ).

As a first-semester student in Munich, Martin became a member of the Catholic student association KSSt.V. Alemannia, in Würzburg the KStV Normannia in the KV , later he was in Würzburg still honor philistine of the KV connection Rheno-Frankonia.
