Engelbert Drerup , actually Julius Philipp Engelbert Drerup , (born February 11, 1871 in Borghorst near Steinfurt , † September 16, 1942 in Münster in Westphalia ) was a German classical philologist .

Life

Engelbert Drerup, the son of a postmaster, distillery and inn owner, first attended the secondary school in his hometown, later the grammar school in Rheine and the grammar school Paulinum in Münster. After graduating from high school in 1889, he studied classical philology in Münster , Munich , Freiburg im Breisgau , Berlin and Leipzig . There he was in 1894 with a thesis De codicum Isocrateorum auctoritate doctorate .

Drerup was an enthusiastic KVer , member of Germania in Münster, Saxonia in Munich and KStV Askania-Burgundia in Berlin . In 1893 he was a co-founder of the KV local circles in Rome and in 1901 in Paris.

The probationary year at the grammar school was followed by a one-year study trip through Italy and Greece (1895/1896) and soon afterwards (1897) the habilitation for classical philology in Munich. During his time as a private lecturer in Munich, Drerup met the poet Martin Greif and developed strong literary interests. However, he continued to pursue an academic career. In 1906 he was appointed associate professor. In 1910 he became an honorary member of the Archaeological Society in Athens .

In 1913 Drerup received a call from the University of Würzburg as full professor, which he followed. In 1923 he moved to the Dutch University of Nijmegen , where he was elected dean in 1929 and rector in 1930. In 1939 he retired. In April 1941 he moved to Münster, where he died on September 16, 1942 after a long illness.

Drerup's main research interests were ancient rhetoric , Homer research and the pronunciation of Greek . He published numerous monographs and essays, as well as his own poems.

His son was the classical archaeologist Heinrich Drerup .
