Thomas Stangl (philologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thomas Stangl (born December 21, 1854 in Aufhausen near Regensburg ; † August 4, 1921 in Würzburg ) was a German classical philologist , especially a Latinist . Lasting merits are his text editions and studies on the handwritten tradition and ancient commentary on Cicero's rhetorical writings .

Life

Thomas Stangl, the son of a red tanner master, attended the royal high school in Regensburg and then studied classical philology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . As a student he undertook extensive manuscript studies in Bavarian libraries. In his dissertation (published in Gotha 1882) he dealt with the late antique commentary by the rhetor Boethius on Cicero's Topica . After his doctorate as Dr. phil. followed in June 1883 the habilitation and appointment as a private lecturer at the university, but at the Stangl did not find a permanent position. He taught at the Ludwigsgymnasium and from August 21, 1887 at the Luitpold-Gymnasium , where he received the title of professor.

During this time, Stangl continued his scientific studies. His publications, which appeared in quick succession, some of which appeared independently, some as supplements to the school program of the Luitpold-Gymnasium, were well received by his colleagues. When Stangl was already at an advanced age, a university career finally opened up for him: on October 1, 1900, he was appointed as an associate professor for classical philology at the University of Würzburg , where he led the newly established philological proseminar. In 1908 he received the title and rank of full professor, and in 1919 he received full rights. After his death at the age of 67 he was buried in his birthplace Aufhausen.

Stangl's scientific work focused on Latin literature throughout antiquity. Methodically, he focused on the history of tradition and textual criticism, and in terms of content (since his studies) on Cicero's rhetorical writings and their ancient explanations; in later years there were also the grammarian Virgilius Maro and the Alexander historian Quintus Curtius Rufus . Stangl's most important achievements are his contributions to the precise knowledge of the handwritten tradition of Cicero: He compared several manuscripts, for which he occasionally undertook long trips (for example to Sicily in 1889), and thus created the basis for the editing work.

His research results were reflected not only in countless individual publications (essays, miscells, program treatises and reviews), but also in editions: Stangl published critical editions of Cicero's writings Orator (1885), Brutus de claris oratoribus (1886) and De oratore (1893) and the so-called Gronov - scholiasts (1884). For the Cicero commentators (Scholiasts) he prepared a summarizing edition, of which he only completed one volume (1912) with the scholias of Asconius Pedianus and numerous anonymous or pseudonymous scholias older and more recent. Volumes 1 and 3 (tradition and indices) did not appear. The edition has remained authoritative to this day and was last reprinted in 2013. The Alexander story of Quintus Curtius Rufus gave Stangl 1902 out for school use. He also prepared a larger critical edition, which he did not complete until his death.

Stangl also participated in the work of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae , for which he excerpted the Cicero scholias and examined the excerpts from Cicero De oratore . From 1914 he was a flag reader.
