The aim was to ensure an inventory, localization, rebuilding and restoration of the legacies of ancient Greece. As an independent scientific society, it now supports the Greek state in protecting monuments and studying Greek antiquity.

Between 1854 and 1894, the investigations and excavations of Kerameikos , Hadrian's Library and the Roman Agora in Athens followed. Numerous investigations were devoted to sites in Attica , Boiotia , the Peloponnese and the Cyclades . During the same period, numerous individual museums were founded in Athens, the holdings of which were later combined to form the National Archaeological Museum .
