Panagiotis Kavvadias ( Greek Παναγιώτης Καββαδίας , born on 1850 [also differently: 1849] in Kothreas, Kefalonia ; died on July 21, 1928 in Athens ) was a Greek classical archaeologist .

Kavvadias studied Classical Philology at the University of Athens and Classical Archeology with Heinrich Brunn at the University of Munich . He is considered the father of Greek archeology, headed the administration of ancient Greece from 1885 to 1909 as chief ephorus, for which he was active as head of the ephorias of the Cyclades and Euboia from 1879 . In 1904 he was appointed to the chair of Classical Archeology at the University of Athens, which he held until 1922. He served as first secretary of the Athens Archaeological Society from 1894 to 1909 and from 1911 to 1920.

In addition to numerous others, the excavations he directed on Kefalonia, in the Asclepius sanctuary of Epidauros , and above all on the Acropolis of Athens have been particularly productive. The deep excavations carried out on the Acropolis in the years 1885–1890 with the support of architects and building researchers Wilhelm Dörpfeld and Georg Kawerau brought to light numerous works and fragments of plastic art, including Koren , gable sculptures of several archaic temples, the torso of the Kritios boy , the famous calf-bearer and the so-called Angelitos-Athena , all interpreted at the time as the remains of the Persian rubble . Kavvadias played a key role in founding and organizing the National Archaeological Museum and the Acropolis Museum in Athens, as he initiated the construction of numerous museums in Greece. In 1915 he started the archaeological journal Αρχαιολογικὸν Δελτίον (Archaiologikon Deltion).

Kavvadias was a corresponding member of the French Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres (1894), a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium, and was one of the founding members of the Academy of Athens in 1926 . The universities of Cambridge and Leipzig awarded him honorary doctorates for his achievements .
