Heinrich Brunn , knight of Brunn since 1882 , (born January 23, 1822 in Wörlitz , † July 23, 1894 in Josephstal near Schliersee ) was a German classical archaeologist .

The son of a pastor studied classical archeology and philology at the University of Bonn . In 1843 he received his doctorate with the dissertation Artificum liberae Graeciae tempora and went to Italy that same year. Until 1853 he worked at the German Archaeological Institute in Rome. In 1854 he received his habilitation in Bonn. In 1865 he followed a call as a full professor to the newly created chair for Classical Archeology at the University of Munich . His students included Gustav Körte , Adolf Furtwängler , Paul Arndt , Walter Amelung , Arthur Milchhöfer and Heinrich Bulle .

Heinrich Brunn did important work, particularly on Greek art history. In 1882 he was raised to the personal nobility with the award of the Order of Merit of the Bavarian Crown . Since 1865 he was a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences . In 1876 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

Heinrich Brunn, father of the mathematician Hermann Brunn , who also edited his writings, was buried in the northern cemetery in Munich. The gravestone was erected by his friends, admirers and students as well as the Corps Palatia Bonn , of which he had been a member since 1840.
