Stefan Ritter (archaeologist)

Stefan Ritter (born January 17, 1959 in Schmalkalden ) is a German classical archaeologist .

Stefan Ritter attended the Polytechnic High School in Barchfeld from 1965 to 1973 and then from 1973 to 1977 the Extended High School in Eisenach . In 1977 he passed the Abitur and was initially a museum guide at the Wartburg in 1977/78 and then did his military service with the NVA from 1978 to 1979 . Then in 1979 Ritter began studying classical philology and German at the University of Jena . in December 1981 he was de-registered and worked from 1982 to 1984 as a cemetery gardener and housekeeper in Jena . He was also a leader in the Leipzig Thomaskirche and most recently a nurse in Leipzig . In March 1984, Ritter left the GDR for the FRG. In the same year he began studying classical archeology, Latin studies and Christian archeology at the University of Heidelberg . In 1986/87 he spent one semester at the Free University of Berlin , in 1990 he was in Rome for a three-month research stay . During his studies he took part in excavations in Ladenburg and Fregellae . His doctorate took place in June 1991 with the work Hercules in Roman Art from the Beginnings to Augustus in Heidelberg. In 1992 he was awarded the Ruprecht Karls Prize for his dissertation .

After receiving his doctorate, Ritter traveled to the Mediterranean region in 1991/92 as a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . As a postdoctoral fellow he was employed at the Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne in 1992/93 and again in 1994 and was a language teacher at the Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest in 1992/93 . In 1994 he became a research assistant at the Archaeological Institute of the University of Freiburg . There he worked in several excavation seasons in the excavation project of the institute in Thugga . In 1998/99, Ritter conducted a research visit to the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford , where he worked as a post-doctoral fellow. The habilitation took place in 2000 with the work Bildkontakte. Gods and heroes in the imagery of Greek coins from the 4th century BC Chr. In Freiburg. In 2001 Ritter became a private lecturer and senior assistant there, and in 2006/07 he was only a private lecturer. From 2001 to 2003 he led the research on the early settlement history of Thugga. In February and July 2005, Ritter was a fellow at the Collegium Budapest. In the winter semester he held a chair at the University of Munich . In 2006/07 he was a research fellow of the Gerda Henkel Foundation . From April 2007 to March 2008 he was Professor (W 2) for Classical Archeology at the University of Erlangen . Since April 2008, Ritter has been a full professor (W 3) at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich and at the same time director of the Museum for Casts of Classical Works .
