Georg Kawerau (born December 12, 1856 in Berlin , † April 13, 1909 in Stettin ; full name: Georg Ferdinand Kawerau ) was a German architect and building researcher .

Georg Kawerau was born as the seventh child of sports educator and later church musician Martin Kawerau and Emilie, née Kahle, and grew up in Berlin. After graduating from the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin, he studied at the Berlin Building Academy and then completed his legal clerkship as a government building manager at the garrison building administration in Stargard, Pomerania .

For health reasons he went to Greece and turned to archeology. He took part in Heinrich Schliemann's excavations in Tiryns in 1885 and carried out the excavation on the Athens Acropolis with Panagiotis Kavvadias from 1885 to 1890 . At Olympia he set up two pillars of Heraion again.

He then worked for a few years as an architect in Turkey , including building a waterworks in Skutari , building roads and building the station building for the Anatolian Railway between Eskişehir and Konya from 1893 to 1896 , after which he built as a partner in the company Wechselmann & Kawerau in Szczecin .

In August 1907, he was awarded University of Giessen the honorary doctorate (Dr. phil. Hc). Theodor Wiegand won him over as excavation architect for the excavations of the Berlin museums in Miletus and Pergamon . Since April 1, 1908, he was employed as assistant director of the Berlin museums with headquarters in Constantinople. With Hubert Knackfuß he worked on the Delphinion in Miletus, with Alexander Conze on the palaces of Pergamon.
