Kore , plural Koren (from Attic κόρη kórē , German 'girl, virgin' ) is the modern name for a type of statue in archaic Greek sculpture. They were mostly made of marble , originally also painted sculptures .

A kore represents a clothed girl or a young woman, without having to decide whether it is a goddess or a mortal, unless further details of the list provide information. She usually stands upright with closed legs or a slightly forward left foot with a straight posture. The arms often hang down on the sides of the body. Sometimes one arm is bent in front of the chest and carries a votive offering . As a rule, they are dressed in a peplos or a chiton . Koren were from the 2nd third of the 7th century BC. Until the beginning of the 5th century BC. Manufactured and set up. The oldest examples include the statue of Nikandre and the Lady of Auxerre from the middle of the 7th century BC. One of the youngest representatives of the statue type is the one shortly before 480 BC. Kore donated by Euthydikos .

Such kores were not only used as free-standing sculptures, but in rare cases also in the architecture of Greek temples instead of columns . Then they are called caryatids . The best known are the koren or caryatids of the Erechtheion of the Acropolis in Athens .

In a broader sense, every girl statue (ett) in Greece was called κιραι ("girl"), including the Tanagra figures representing women .

The male counterpart of the kore is the kouros .
