Statue of Nikandre in its current position in Athens

The statue of Nikandre is a life-size statue found on Delos in 1878, dating from around 660 BC. Was consecrated. It belongs to the type of statue referred to as Kore and is one of the earliest examples of large-scale sculpture in Greek art . The statue is now in the National Archaeological Museum in Athens , Inv. 1.

The statue is 1.75 meters tall and made of marble . It represents a standing woman, who is dressed in a long robe. The arms lie on the sides. The long hair falls in different strands on the shoulders. The face is badly damaged. The figure's body is flat and somewhat inorganic, but was probably once painted - similar to the Lady of Auxerre - and may have seemed more lively. On the left side of the robe there is a dedicatory inscription :

Nikandre dedicated me to the long-range hit, the protector of the arrows, the daughter of Deinodikos, the Naxier, outstanding among women, sister of Deinomenes, wife of Phraxos.

According to the inscription, the statue was consecrated in the sanctuary of Artemis on Delos. Nothing further is known about the founder Nikandre, maybe she was the daughter or wife of a tyrant of Naxos .
