Werner Ekschmitt

Werner Ekschmitt (* 1926 in what is now Wuppertal ; † December 24, 2004 in Staufen im Breisgau ) was a German lecturer at the Goethe Institute who excelled as a publicist on Greek and archaeological topics.

Werner Ekschmitt grew up in Wuppertal and after the Second World War he studied classical philology , philosophy and religious history at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and also did his doctorate in Heidelberg. After several professional positions, Ekschmitt became a lecturer at the Goethe Institute. From 1960 he worked for the institute in Greece , first in Athens , later as head of the branch in Patras and then for seven years as head of the Thessaloniki department . During this time Ekschmitts discovered his deep affection for Greece. In 1966 he published his first book on the subject.

In 1980 Ekschmitt was transferred to Staufen and worked at the Goethe Institute there for several years. After retiring, a very productive phase as a writer began. Ekschmitt published a few books that were intended for an interested lay audience. Some of them were reprinted and widely distributed. Important publications were the double volume Art and Culture of the Cyclades, in which Ekschmitt presented the history and art of the Cyclades in a vivid way , as well as The Seven Wonders of the World. Their edification, destruction and rediscovery. Ekschmitt's interests ranged from the Cycladic - Mycenaean and Minoan times to late and post-ancient times. Although generally described as shy, he continued to participate in the academic life of the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg for a long time . He died of complications from cancer.
