An Ephoria for Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities ( Greek Εφορεία Προϊστορικών και Κλασικών Αρχαιοτήτων ) is a regional department of the Ministry of Culture in Greece , which is responsible for the archaeological preservation of monuments .
The authority of the ephorias extends to all matters relating to the discovery, security and protection of the Greek material heritage. This also includes the exhibition in museums, the conservation, reconstruction, study and publication of all monuments and found objects. The ephorias monitor compliance with all laws and regulations relating to ancient relics.
There are currently 39 such departments. The numbering is done using the Greek numerals from A´ (1st) to ΚΘ΄ (39th).
Ephoria: Attica region with the exception of the areas covered by the 1st and 3rd ephorias and the region of Aigosthena . Seat: Athens
Ephorie: Municipality of Athens with the exception of the area covered by the 1st ephoria and the regions Eleusis and Agii Theodori in the prefecture of Corinthia. Seat: Athens
