The regional district Kozani ( Greek Periferiaki Enotita Kozanis ) is the largest of the four regional districts of the Greek region of Western Macedonia . Its main town Kozani is also the capital of the region. Until 2010 Kozani was one of the Greek prefectures . With the Kallikratis reform , the powers of the prefecture were transferred to the region and the municipalities, which had been greatly reduced by amalgamation. The Kozani regional district sends 26 members to the 41-member West Macedonian Regional Council and thus holds the majority of the seats, but has no further political significance. It includes the municipalities of Eordea , Kozani , Servia-Velvendo and Voio .

In terms of landscape, the region is mountainous and is characterized by a continental climate with cold winters and hot summers. There are large temperature fluctuations between winter and summer, and in winter freezing temperatures can even freeze lakes.
