The Kos regional district ( Greek Περιφερειακή Ενότητα Κω Periferiaki Enotita Ko ) is one of 13 regional districts in the Greek South Aegean region . It was formed on the occasion of the administrative reform in 2010 from four island communities of the former Dodecanese prefecture and corresponds exactly to the area of the former Kos province , which existed until 1997. In proportion to its 34,396 inhabitants, the area sends five members to the regional council, but has no further political significance as a local authority. Today it is divided into the two communities Kos and Nisyros .
