List of former provinces of Greece
The province ( Greek επαρχία Eparchía ) was largely centralized written Greece to the Greek community reform of 1997 ( "Program Ioannis Kapodistrias" or Greek Σχέδιο Καποδίστρια , Schedio Capodistrian ) the authority under the level of the prefectures ( Nomi ) . Some parishes were not part of a province, but were directly subordinate to the prefecture alongside the provinces. In the prefecture of Attica there was a large province, which included the capital Athens and its suburbs and extended beyond the boundaries of the Attic prefecture districts. In the course of the creation of numerous large municipalities from several localities, the provinces lost their importance and were abolished in 1999. At the provincial level there were 147 areas, specifically:
¹ The municipalities of Ydra and Samothraki were independent municipalities
² Prefectures without further subdivision into provinces
³ The monastic republic of Athos enjoys internal autonomy under the sovereignty of the Greek state
