Dimitsana

Dimitsana ( Greek Δημητσάνα ( f. Sg. )) Is a village in the highlands of Arcadia in the Peloponnese in Greece with around 400 inhabitants. 1992–2010 it formed the community Dimitsana with some neighboring towns. On January 1, 2011, this municipality was merged with seven others in the area to form the municipality of Gortynia , whose administrative seat is Dimitsana in the municipality of the same name.

geography

Dimitsana lies between 960 and 1080 m above sea level in the mountains of Arcadia, above the Lousios Gorge . The village is located on a saddle, over which one can reach the northern Peloponnese from the Megalopoli plateau . Due to the high altitude, it doesn't get so hot in summer, making the village and the surrounding area a popular travel destination for Greek tourists.

history

Dimitsana stands on the ruins of ancient Tefthis, which was mentioned in documents about the Trojan War . Dimitsana was first mentioned in a document in 967. Settlement also played a role in the uprising against the Ottoman Empire in 1821.

Attractions

In Dimitsana there is an open-air museum about the use of water power , a museum of sacred art and a library with writings from the 14th century. The location of the village itself is also an attraction. The Lousios Gorge with hiking trails to the rock monasteries Prodromou and Philosophou is also one of the attractions.
