Paramythia ( Greek Παραμυθιά ( f. Sg. ), Albanian Ajdonat / -i ) is a municipality in the municipality of Souli in the Epirus region in north-western Greece. Until 2010 it was an independent municipality, since 1947 a municipality (gr. Dimos ); on January 1st it was incorporated into the community of Souli, where it has since formed one of three districts. The municipality of Paramythia itself has 2,730 inhabitants and is the seat of the municipality of Souli.

Located south of the Kalamas River at an average altitude of 243  m , Paramythia forms the Greek Orthodox metropolis of Thesprotias . Paramythia is known for the well-preserved Byzantine Church of the Virgin Mary. The city is 750 m high between the Acheron and Kalamas rivers .

Paramythia has always been known for its goldsmiths. One of them was Sotirios Voulgaris, who emigrated to Corfu in 1877 and from there first to Naples and then to Rome in 1881. There he opened his jewelry store Bulgari in Via Sintina . It was very successful and in 1905 he was able to open a new big one. The luxury goods manufacturer is still in the third generation of the family to this day. The old shop building in Paramythia still exists today.

Attractions

Paramythia offers several attractions. These include the Byzantine bath, the Castle of Eleas, which is known for its Venetian clock or, for example, the Koulia, a Byzantine tower. The traditionally built houses and the paved market in the city center are unusual. Then there is the Acheron River, which is a popular tourist destination due to the clear water from the numerous springs in the river's course.
