Vori ( Greek Βώροι ( n. Pl. )) Is a place in the Messara plain in the south of the Greek island of Crete and belongs to the municipality of Tymbaki in the municipality of Festos . The place is divided into two parts, the older Katochori ( Greek Κατωχώρι = lower village ) and the northern Panochori ( Greek Πανοιρι = upper village ).

designation

According to a legend, the place is said to have been named after Boros, a son of Rhadamanthys , the king of Phaistos . Another attempt to explain it says that the name is derived from the Greek word for north ( Greek βοριάς ), because the place is north of the ancient city of Phaistos.

history

The village was first mentioned in 1394. However, both ceramics from the 12th century, which were discovered during construction work, and frescoes in the church of Agios Ioannes from the beginning of the 14th century, show that the area was inhabited earlier. According to the Venetian chronicler Petros Kastrofylaka, Vorus, as it was called at the time, had 312 inhabitants in 1583 and, according to the census in 1834, 25 Christian and 5 Muslim families lived here. On January 31, 1925, the municipality Vorron ( Greek Βόρρων ) was founded, the name of which was changed on October 16, 1940 to the current form. Vori has had a partnership with the French municipality of Camblanes-et-Meynac since 1995 .

Churches

In the old part of the village there is the church of Agios Ioannis , which was built in the 12th century and in the 13th-14th Century was provided with a new vestibule . Only a few remains of the frescoes from the 14th century are preserved on the walls . The church of Agia Pelagia in the west of the village dates from the 16th century and the main church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary , was built between 1864 and 1881.

Southwest of the village, on the main road to Tymbaki , is the church of Agios Georgios Kontaras (also called Agios Georgios Kontouratou ) from the 12th century. The frescoes are well preserved and show, among other things, St. George on a white horse.

Two kilometers north of the village is the church of the former Panagia Kardiotissa monastery.
