Tymbaki ( Greek Δημοτική Ενότητα Τυμπακίου ) has been a municipality in the municipality of Festos in the south of the Greek island of Crete since January 1, 2011 . The seat is in the city of the same name Tymbaki . Before the Kallikratis reform , Tymbaki was a separate community.

history

Results of the 1881 census

Already in the 19th century there was an eparchy Pyrgiotissa, the dimensions of which corresponded to the current municipality of Tymbaki. It was named after the tower of Pyrgiotissa ( Greek Πύργος της Πυργιώτισσας ), also called Kastel-Priotissa, which stood south of Tymbaki. The Ottomans had settled Muslims from Turkey on the island with the aim of converting all of Crete to Islam . For this reason, censuses were carried out regularly.
