Kokkinos Pyrgos ( Greek Κόκκινος Πύργος ( m. Sg. ) 'Red Tower') is a port in the south of the Greek island of Crete . As part of the town of Tymbaki, it belongs to the municipality of Tymbaki in the municipality of Festos . The name of the place goes back to a red mud tower, of which nothing is known.

In Kokkinos Pyrgos, mass tourism has not yet arrived and there are only a few smaller hotels. The kilometer-long sand-gravel beach of Katalyki ( Greek Καταλυκή , end ') stretches south of the port , but due to the fencing of the Tymbaki military airfield, it can only be used as a bathing beach for about one kilometer. In summer Kokkinos Pyrgos offers boat trips to the Paximadia Islands .

From June to September, loggerhead turtles use the Katalyki beach to lay their eggs. During this time, volunteers from the Archelon organization look after the nests, mark and fence them in, trying to reconcile tourism and nature conservation.

In 2005, the planning of a large container port a few kilometers north of Kokkinos Pyrgos began. There were protests by the population and in January 2009 it was finally announced that there would be no container port.
