Temeneli
Temeneli ( Greek Τεμενέλι ( n. Sg. )) Was a village on the Greek island of Crete and lay north of the Messara plain on the southern slope of the Psiloritis Mountains between Grigoria and Lochria .
history
Temeneli was first mentioned in 1248 as a property of the Palianis Monastery . During the Venetian period the land was given to the citizens as a fief . According to the Turkish census of 1834, the place was in the Pyrgiotissa eparchy and only five Muslim families lived there. Between 1896 and 1898 during or shortly after the Turkish-Greek War , the Muslim families left the place.
On January 23, 1925, the uninhabited settlement Temeneli was incorporated into the newly established municipality of Magarikari . Three years later on May 16, 1928, the Temeneli settlement was closed.
During the German occupation of the island of Crete, the Greek captain GE Petrakogiorgis hid with a group of resistance fighters in a ravine near Temeneli. The Wehrmacht advanced against them and on the night of July 8th to 9th, 1942 there was an exchange of fire in which 7 German soldiers were killed.
