Arnea ( Greek Αρναία ( f. Sg. ); Alternative German spelling Arnaia; old name Liarigovi ) is a place on the Greek peninsula Chalkidiki inland on the northern edge of the Cholomondas mountain. Arnea is located 3 km east of Paleochori , 90 km southeast of Thessaloniki and about 25 km northwest of Polygyros .

The town hall

The area around Arnea was first mentioned in the writings of the Kastamonitou ( Athos ) monastery in the 14th century . The settlement was probably founded in the middle of the 16th century due to the source (still preserved today). In the further course of history, Arnaia was one of the so-called Mademochoria, who operated the silver ore mining in the northeast of Chalkidiki under Ottoman suzerainty. This established economic prosperity and political power. As part of the fighting of the Greek War of Independence 1821-1829, the population of Liarigovi (Arnea) rose in 1821, which was answered by the Turkish occupation forces with the destruction of Liaringovi.

During the first Balkan War , Liaringovi (Arnea) was captured by Greek troops in November 1912. In 1928 Liaringovi was renamed Arnea.

In 1997, Arnea became the administrative seat of the municipality (Dimos) Arnea , which in turn became part of the newly created municipality of Aristotelis in 2010 .

Arnea is famous for its carpet weaving, especially its flokati . Examples can be seen in the small folklore museum.
