Paleochori ( Greek Παλαιοχώρι ( n. Sg. ); Lit. translation 'the old village'; alternative transcription Palaiochori ) is a place on the Greek peninsula of Chalkidiki . Paleochori lies inland on the northern edge of the Cholomondas mountain. Approx. Polygyros is 20 km southwest , Thessaloniki is approx. 80 km northwest , Megali Panagia is 7 km south and Arnea is 5 km west. The Paleochori settlement is a local community in the municipality of Arnea in the Aristotelis municipality, which was created in 2011 .

history

The place is mentioned as Neposi Castle in texts from the archives of the monasteries on Athos in 1320 and 1441. Between 1478 and 1568 the population grew from 24 to about 100 families.

In 1793 the French ambassador in Thessaloniki visited Espirit m. Paleochori cuisine. During the Greek War of Independence , the village was destroyed by the Ottomans and Turks. It was attacked by communist rebels on August 14, 1948 during the Greek Civil War .

Contains wall paintings, including a copy of the Panagia Gorgoepikoos icon (original in the Dochiariou monastery on Athos) and a 16th century icon by Taxiarchis Michail. Near the church is the statue of Ioakim III Megaloprepis.

A celebration or folk festival takes place annually on July 5th.

Giorgos Zorbas from Paleochori is known as the inspiration for the novel Alexis Sorbas by Nikos Kazantzakis .

One street is named after the patriarch Vartholomaios A ' , who visited Paleochori in June 1999.
